PAX Prime 2011: 343i announce Master Chief’s role in new Halo trilogy.

What we saw in the E3 expo video was definitely not the final look at Master Chief. “….. Master Chief is an 800-pound hero that is part tank, part jet fighter.” is the idea behind the design of Master Chief, indicated by marketing director Kenneth Scott. True there are other super soldiers out there we are fans of but good old John 117 is Chief among them!! – (pardon the pun!). We will see more of the Forerunner civilization, in action and functioning not like when Master Chief came upon the sites in the past. So in the new Trilogy we’ll see Master Chief visiting planets the Forerunner’s left operable. Frank O’ Conner kinda confirmed that Forerunners are in the game, by explaining that you’ll “experience Forerunner architecture when it’s not completely inert and empty.” Will we see the Forerunners ? hmmmm…. if your read some of the prologs to the comics we might see Forerunner scenes akin to the Marvel Comics series. Check this image out…

Master Chief’s life story can be found in the Halo novels are these stories going to be part of the script for Halo 4? Halo 4 gameplay will be like Halo but with an expanded arsenal of weapons, armor and abilities. Cortana, Master Chief’s personal artificial intelligence, in Halo 4, plays an important role in the Master Chiefs development. Let’s not make this a love story guys!!

So why was Halo 4 billed as a new trilogy? 343 wanted to signal fans its committed to Halo. “There’s 200 or so people working on Halo 4, and they’ve been doing so for a couple of years now.”–Frank O’Connor on the commitment to the future of Halo. Most of what this trilogy will focus on is exploring the character of Master Chief. As far as the fans 343i has plans to expand beyond the games into the Halo universe , comic books or action figures, “will all feed into the games,” said Frank O’Connor, offering a rich experience for us fans!! 343 Industries, launched three years ago to publish Halo 3: ODST initially, but they needed a team to continue the Halo franchise. Executive Producer Kiki Wolfkill is not only in charge of building the team to create Halo 4, but to expand and build it into a game studio from our take into a new Bungie. They started from scratch from the ground up, they hired talent with attuned to a craftsman approach but with technical and creative expertise that could execute. The game development world is young and they had trouble finding people that had grown enough in the industry and to take it to the next level and beyond. 343i has the advantage that a huge fan base is out there ready for the next trilogy! go 343i!

Activision responds to EA Call of Duty trash talk

SOURCE GAMESPOT.COM :Gamescom 2011: Publisher CEO Eric Hirshberg calls rhetoric “bad for the industry,” says game makers should be supporting each other instead.

With Battlefield 3, Electronic Arts wants to take down Activision’s Call of Duty franchise, and it hasn’t been shy about admitting as much. However, in opening statements at this year’s Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg suggested such rabble-rousing ultimately serves no one.

As reported by Eurogamer, Hirshberg said competition was a good thing. However, he added that public statements hoping for a rival’s game to fail crosses a line.

“Recently a competitor of ours was quoted as saying that he wants to see Call of Duty ‘rot from the core,’” Hirshberg said. “I’ve been asked countless times to respond to this comment and I’ve generally chosen not to. My job is to help our incredibly talented, passionate teams to make the best games they can, not to throw insults around at others. But I actually feel this kind of rhetoric is bad for our industry.”

Hirshberg went on to say that publishers should be supportive of each other, because a great game will always sell because it’s great, not because it steals sales from the competition. He said that was the mindset of politics, which necessitates that one side lose if another side is to win.

“We shouldn’t be tearing each other apart fighting for a bigger piece of the pie,” Hirshberg said. “We should all be focused on trying to grow a bigger pie. If we as an industry act like there’s a finite number of games in the world, then there will be.”

Gamestop Q2 shows strong used game and digital sales

GameStop’s total sales were down 3.1% in the quarter ending July 30, 2011 — $1.74 billion in sales this quarter compared to $1.8 billion in the same period last year. A boon for the company has been (get this!) used game and digital sales, which both rose 12% and 69% year-over-year, respectively. Digital sales are up 16% compared to Q1 of 2011 and with the recent announcement of downloadable PC games being sold at retail, we wouldn’t be surprised to see even greater digital revenue in Q3.

GameStop also cited lower hardware sales and fewer games this quarter compared to last year, both of which the company said contributed to an overall lower quarter for store sales, down 9.1%. The retailer also reported diminished net sales of $30.9 million compared to $40.3 million in 2010.

LA Noire, NCAA Football 12, Infamous 2, Brink and Mortal Kombat were GameStop’s top earners in the quarter, spanning the classic genres of shooters, sports games, fighters and whatever you’d call LA Noire.Crime drama genre? The “character actor did it” genre?

Portable PlayStation Vita has more RAM than PS3

More is always better, right? For Sony’s upcoming PlayStation Vita portable, more RAM means it has some features that big brother PlayStation 3 doesn’t: namely, cross-game chat, courtesy of the console’s Party system. “So the reason why we were able to include something like Party, which enables cross-game voice chat,” Sony Worldwide Studios prez Shuhei Yoshida told Eurogamer, “is because we designed Vita so it always has enough resources to handle something like that behind the game while it’s running.”

Sony has finally confirmed the specifications of the system’s RAM, after rumors that the electronics giant had halved the RAM to better compete on price with the 3DS. “There were some rumours for the last few months. Some developer mentioned the RAM was halved. We never announced the amount of RAM, and we never changed it,” Yoshida said. So in order to combat confusion, they went into Gamescom unafraid to share those details.

And, without further adieu, we’ll share those deets! The PlayStation Vita has 512MB of RAM and 128MB of V-RAM, compared to the PlayStation 3′s 256MB of system RAM and 256MB of video RAM. While that’s half of the PS3′s video RAM, Yoshida reminds us that the resolution of the two platforms is very different. “The resolution on the PS Vita screen is much lower,” he explained. “Even though it’s four times the resolution of PSP, compared to the console, the amount of data you have to push is much smaller.”

While this all sounds like good news, there is another reading: Since the Vita uses all that extra system RAM to allow for cross-game chat, one could assume Sony will remain unable to implement the long-requested feature on the PS3. Then again, nearly five years into the console’s life, that inability should be pretty apparent to everyone by now.

Japanese Loyalty Goes to Playstation Xbox 360 Sales Drop

Edge cites Media Create data which puts Microsoft’s year-to-date 360 sales in Japan at 46.7% lower than they were at the same period last year. Adding insult to that sales injury is the fact that the 360′s last “high-profile Japanese exclusive” Idolmaster 2 will be ported to the PlayStation 3. Edge reports that “Geo, the nation’s largest specialist retailer, is drastically scaling back its Xbox 360 business” while “staff at electronics retailer Yamada Denki in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, confirmed that the company is removing hardware and software from the majority of its stores nationwide.”

Of course, Xbox 360 systems and games will still be available online, and Edge writes, “it is our understanding that Amazon now handles a substantial proportion of Japanese Xbox 360 software sales.” But without a solid retail presence for the Xbox 360, Microsoft may have a difficult time finding shelf space for its next console, expected to be released in the next several years. Even without retail support, don’t expect to see Microsoft abandon the strategic Japanese market. As long as Sony, Nintendo, and Japanese publishers exist, Microsoft will work to gain traction in that market.

Lollipop Chainsaw, Cheerleaders, Cortana

Halo heat applied by Cortana as Masterchief’s cheerleader!    But will Halo 4 go the way of other Video Games and introduce a new Cortana that can kick butt like the new Lollipop Chainsaw’s Heroine ?   Apparently Halo 4 will have an increased or more significant role for Cortana could it be more physical rather than AI’ish?  Hard to take the Halo Series and compare our favorite FPS hottie to a slew of games flavored by Japanese Anime stylings for heroines.

Halo 3 Cortana

A new Zombie Killing game that Warner Bros will release next year in the US is Lollipop Chainsaw which was developed by Suda 51 Studios.   GameSpot has a trailer featuring traditionally Anime styled heroine  Julliet Starling in a cheerleader outfit wiping out zombies.   Eye candy to say the least.  Thanks IGN for the scoop of course we put on a Halo spin, although Cortana is an AI character she’s still … well you know…

Bungie Legacy and Destiny for Partners

Bungie_Destiny Logo

When your great your great.  Bungie may hold the key to the future success of two of the largest game studios.  Original creations by Bungie are at the center of the latest strategies and hype for Microsoft (MSFT) and Activision/Blizzard (ATVI).    Although we now know the strategy of 343 Industries, Halo CE anniversary this fall and Halo 4 following.  We have heard that  Halo 4 is Possibly that start a new trilogy of games for the Halo universe.  We don’t, however, know exactly what Bungie is producing for Activision,  just hints if you look hard enough.      Bungie could be producing an MMO after some video analysis by our own writer Ted.  Read more about Bungie‘s MMO codenamed Tiger here.

Splits! and Mergers!

Soon after the Bungie Microsoft Split we had the huge news about Activision and Infinity Ward Split, that was ugly.   The original creators of the COD series were forced out in a bad way, read more here.  Call of Duty Black-ops however was a huge Success! despite bad feelings in the gaming world towards the Activision CEO and his handling of the Infinity ward situation.

As far as the Bungie and Microsoft Split.  It was peaceful, we got three games out of the Deal, Halo Wars; Halo ODST and Halo Reach.  Halo Wars from Ensemble Studios, was the first time another studio produced a game from the HALO IP.   Bungie‘s best success’s have been when they were part of Microsoft, Halo 3, Halo 3 ODST and  Halo REACH.  Each sold in the multi millions the first 24 hours breaking records across all entertainment media debuts.

Banking on Bungie!

When you compare the current situation with both Activision and Microsoft there are big differences.  We see that Activision now has the talent of Bungie behind them, and they could be producing the biggest and best MMO (with social capabilites ala Little Big Planet!!).    Microsoft however is reliant on existing and new talent (they recently posted jobs for Game Engineers for 343 Industries).  In effect they are building their studio for these products.  This may not be a negative at all.   Microsoft Game Studios has been a managing partner with other studios over time that have proven to be successful partnerships besides Bungie.       Interesting to note however that Microsoft had its chance at developing an MMO game via its Ensemble studios subsidiary that it closed right after the Halo Wars launch.  The closing of Ensemble, they say, was because of a worsening economy after the 2008 financial fiasco we’re still feeling today.   It was revealed soon after that the game that was cancelled was in fact an MMO version of Halo Wars!!   Now we hear Bungie is creating a space based inter-Planetary MMO for Activision.   What goes around comes around!   We loved Halo Wars BTW.

A significant challenge for 343Industries and Microsoft to produce games that many of us Halo fans may hold a sub-par disposition towards, sans Bungie involvement.    You cannot forget that Bungie‘s biggest successes were when they were tied to Microsoft.    Just as in the past you’ll see more of these partnerships join and disband without much of an affect on the overall popularity of a game, look at COD post Infinity Ward!.    In a bad economy we anxiously wait to see which partnerships have mettle, stay the course and publish something that we will want to spend our ever diminishing money on…

New Bungie Game in The Works!

It’s been almost a year since Bungie released their last game, Halo Reach.  Now, to cap off their 20th anniversary, Bungie has created a video titled, “O Brave New World”.  This video not only celebrates the Bungie legacy, but it also reveals in the end that Bungie is creating a first-person MMO.  This MMO’s codename is “Tiger”, and it will take place in space.  A possible title for this game could be “Destiny”, but this is uncomfirmed.  Bungie writer Joseph Staten said in the video: ” We feel respnsible for not just telling an isolated story but for building a universe that at some is going to become more “the fans” than ours”.  Could this mean that they will create a game where the players will be able to take  forge creation to a larger scale?  We’ll just have to wait and find out.  In the mean time, take a look at the video Bungie created and tell us what you think.
